Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 ounces Woodford Reserve bourbon
  • 0.5 ounce simple syrup or 1 sugar cube
  • 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 strip orange peel about 2 inches long
  • Large ice cube or 2 to 3 regular ice cubes
  • A few drops water optional, for dilution

Equipment

  • Mixing glass or cocktail pitcher
  • Bar spoon or long-handled spoon
  • Jigger
  • Rocks glass or lowball glass
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Muddler (optional)
  • Citrus peeler or vegetable peeler
  • Ice cube tray or ice maker

Method
 

  1. Fill a rocks glass with ice cubes and let it chill for 1 minute.
  2. In a mixing glass, combine 0.5 ounce simple syrup and 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters.
  3. Add 2 ounces Woodford Reserve bourbon to the mixing glass.
  4. Fill the mixing glass three-quarters full with ice cubes.
  5. Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 30 seconds to chill and dilute.
  6. Discard the ice from the chilled rocks glass.
  7. Strain the stirred cocktail into the empty rocks glass using a cocktail strainer.
  8. Add one large ice cube or 2 to 3 regular ice cubes to the glass.
  9. Hold an orange peel over the drink and gently squeeze to express oils onto the surface.
  10. Drop the expressed orange peel into the glass as garnish.

Notes

Use a large ice cube to minimize dilution and maintain flavor balance throughout sipping.
