Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 ounces Woodford Reserve bourbon
  • 1 sugar cube or 0.5 teaspoon simple syrup
  • 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Splash of water about 0.25 ounce, optional
  • 1 large ice cube or 3 to 4 standard ice cubes
  • 1 orange peel
  • 1 maraschino cherry optional

Equipment

  • Rocks glass (8 to 10 ounces)
  • Bar spoon or long stirring spoon
  • Cocktail jigger (1.5 oz and 0.5 oz)
  • Cutting board and paring knife
  • Bar pick or skewer (optional)
  • Large ice cube mold or Lewis bag and mallet (optional)

Method
 

  1. Chill the rocks glass in the freezer for 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Place the sugar cube in the glass and add 2 to 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.
  3. Muddle the sugar cube and bitters into a paste using a bar spoon or muddler.
  4. Add a splash of water and stir until the sugar dissolves.
  5. Add a large ice cube or standard ice cubes to the glass.
  6. Pour 2 ounces of Woodford Reserve bourbon over the ice.
  7. Stir with a bar spoon for about 30 seconds until well chilled.
  8. Express the orange peel over the drink, rub it on the rim, and drop it into the glass.
  9. Garnish with a maraschino cherry if desired.

Notes

Use one large ice cube for slower dilution and a colder drink.
