Ingredients

Main
  • 8 ounces hot water or cold water if making iced
  • 1 black tea bag or 1 teaspoon loose leaf black tea
  • 4 to 5 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice about half a lemon
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice about half a lime
  • 1 tablespoon honey or 3/4 tablespoon if you prefer less sweetness
  • Ice cubes for iced version

Equipment

  • Kettle or pot for boiling water
  • Tea infuser or strainer
  • Mug or cup
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Measuring spoons
  • Blender bottle (optional)

Method

  1. Heat 8 ounces of water in a kettle until it reaches a rolling boil.
  2. Place the black tea bag in a mug, pour the hot water over it, and steep for 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Remove the tea bag, squeezing it gently against the side of the mug to extract the remaining liquid.
  4. Add 4 to 5 fresh mint leaves to the hot tea and gently muddle with the back of a spoon for about 10 seconds.
  5. Pour in 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice and 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice.
  6. Add 1 tablespoon honey and stir until completely dissolved.
  7. Taste and adjust: add more citrus juice if it tastes too sweet, or more honey if it tastes too tart.
  8. Serve immediately while hot, or let cool to room temperature and pour over ice for an iced version.

Notes

For a concentrate, brew 4 tea bags in 16 ounces of hot water, steep 3 minutes, stir in 1/4 cup honey, 2 ounces lemon juice, and 2 ounces lime juice. Store in the fridge for up to one week.
