Method
- Before you start mixing, set out all your ingredients and equipment on the counter. This prevents you from scrambling mid-recipe and ensures you have everything you need.
- Add a generous amount of crushed ice to your cocktail shaker. Crushed ice chills the drink faster than cubes and creates a better texture when shaken.
- Using a jigger, measure out 1 ounce of coconut rum and pour it into the shaker. The coconut rum forms the foundation of your drink's tropical flavor.
- Measure 1 ounce of banana liqueur and add it to the shaker. This ingredient brings the signature sweet banana flavor that makes the drink taste nostalgic and fun.
- Measure 2 ounces of fresh pineapple juice and pour it in with the other ingredients. Pineapple juice brightens the drink and balances the sweetness with natural acidity.
- Pour 1 ounce of heavy cream or coconut cream into the shaker. The cream makes the drink silky and adds richness without overwhelming the tropical flavors.
- Close your cocktail shaker tightly and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside becomes frosty. Vigorous shaking properly chills and combines all the ingredients while adding texture.
- Place your strainer on top of the shaker and pour the mixture into a highball or rocks glass filled with fresh crushed ice. Straining removes any ice shards and gives you a smooth drink.
- Top with a pineapple wedge or maraschino cherry if desired, and serve immediately. A good garnish makes the drink look as fun as it tastes and adds a finishing tropical touch.
Notes
Pro Tip: Chill your glass in the freezer for 5 minutes before serving, and make sure your pineapple juice is cold straight from the fridge to keep the drink perfectly chilled without watering it down. Use fresh pineapple juice rather than from concentrate if possible for the best flavor. For a frozen version, blend all ingredients with 1 cup of crushed ice instead of shaking. For a mocktail version, omit the rum and liqueur and add 2 extra ounces of pineapple juice plus a splash of cream.
