Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 ounces rye whiskey or bourbon
  • 0.5 ounce Kahlua or other coffee liqueur
  • 0.25 ounce fresh orange juice
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Large ice cube or several regular ice cubes
  • Orange peel for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mixing glass
  • Jigger or measuring shot glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Strainer (hawthorn or julep)
  • Coupe glass or rocks glass
  • Citrus peeler or vegetable peeler
  • Ice (large cubes)

Method
 

  1. Chill a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker or mixing glass with a large ice cube or several regular ice cubes.
  3. Measure 2 ounces of rye whiskey or bourbon with a jigger and pour into the shaker.
  4. Add 0.5 ounce of Kahlua or other coffee liqueur to the shaker.
  5. Pour in 0.25 ounce of freshly squeezed orange juice.
  6. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top of the mixture.
  7. Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 15 to 20 seconds to chill and dilute slightly.
  8. Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass, adding a fresh large ice cube if using a rocks presentation.
  9. Use a citrus peeler to cut a 2-inch strip of orange peel, squeeze the oils over the drink, and drop it in or place on the rim.

Notes

Serve immediately as a sophisticated after-dinner cocktail or nightcap.
