Ingredients

Main
  • 1 cup brewed coffee hot or cooled to room temperature
  • 1 scoop protein powder whey, casein, or plant-based
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice dairy, almond, oat, or coconut
  • 1 tablespoon sweetener honey, maple syrup, agave, or sugar
  • 1/2 cup ice if making it cold
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract optional

Equipment

  • Blender or immersion blender
  • Coffee maker or espresso machine
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cup
  • Large mug or drinking glass

Method

  1. Start by making a full cup of strong coffee using your preferred brewing method. Strong coffee ensures the flavor doesn't get diluted by the milk and protein powder.
  2. Scoop one serving of your protein powder into the blender. Measuring by weight is more accurate than scooping, but a standard scoop from your protein container works fine for most people.
  3. Pour 1/2 cup of your chosen milk into the blender with the protein powder. This helps the protein dissolve more evenly and prevents it from clumping up when the hot coffee hits it.
  4. Add one tablespoon of your chosen sweetener to the blender. If you're using a liquid sweetener like honey or syrup, it mixes better when you blend, but granulated sugar works too.
  5. Slowly pour your hot brewed coffee into the blender with the other ingredients. If you're using a standard blender with a plastic pitcher, let the coffee cool to room temperature first to avoid warping the container.
  6. Blend on high speed for 30 to 45 seconds until you see a thick layer of foam on top and the mixture looks creamy and uniform throughout. A proper blend incorporates air and creates that cafe-quality texture you're after.
  7. If you prefer your protein coffee cold, add 1/2 cup of ice to the blender and pulse for another 10 to 15 seconds. Don't over-blend or the ice will melt and dilute your drink.
  8. Pour the protein coffee into your favorite mug or glass immediately after blending. The foam settles quickly, so drink it while it's at its best texture-wise.

Notes

Blend your ingredients in this order: protein powder, milk, sweetener, then coffee. This method prevents clumping and ensures a silky texture every single time. Use a high-powered blender if you have one for best results. Make coffee ice cubes the night before to keep your drink cold without watering it down.
