Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces Patron Silver Tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice about one large lime, freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 ounces Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 0.5 ounces simple syrup or 1/2 teaspoon agave nectar
  • Kosher salt for rimming the glass
  • 1 cup ice crushed or cubed
  • 1 lime wheel or wedge for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with a lid
  • Jigger for measuring
  • Bar spoon or long spoon
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Rocks glass or margarita glass
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Small shallow dish for salt rim

Method

  1. Cut a fresh lime into a wedge or wheel and run it around the rim of your rocks glass or margarita glass. Pour kosher salt into a small shallow dish and gently dip the wet rim into the salt, turning it to coat evenly on all sides.
  2. Add a generous handful of ice to your prepared glass, filling it about three-quarters full.
  3. Pour 2 ounces of Patron Silver tequila into your cocktail shaker or mason jar.
  4. Squeeze fresh lime juice into the shaker, aiming for exactly 1 ounce.
  5. Add 0.5 ounces of Cointreau or triple sec to the shaker.
  6. Pour 0.5 ounces of simple syrup into the shaker.
  7. Fill your shaker with ice, covering all the liquid ingredients completely.
  8. Close the shaker tightly and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until the shaker gets cold in your hands.
  9. Using a cocktail strainer or the lid of your shaker, pour the margarita over the ice in your salt-rimmed glass.
  10. Place a fresh lime wheel or wedge on the rim of the glass as garnish. Serve immediately while the drink is properly chilled.

Notes

Always use fresh lime juice squeezed within a few hours of making your drink; the difference between fresh and bottled juice is the single biggest factor that separates restaurant-quality margaritas from disappointing ones. Chill your glass in the freezer for 10 minutes before preparing the drink so the margarita stays cold longer and the salt rim stays intact.
