Ingredients

Main
  • 3 ounces strong espresso about 90 milliliters
  • 5 ounces evaporated milk about 150 milliliters, chilled
  • 2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk or to taste
  • 4 to 6 ice cubes optional, for chilled version

Equipment

  • Espresso machine or strong brewed coffee maker
  • Small saucepan or milk frother
  • Tall drinking glass
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Measuring cups
  • Small pitcher or pouring vessel

Method

  1. Pull a double shot of espresso into a measuring cup, or brew 3 ounces of very strong coffee using whatever method you prefer.
  2. Remove the evaporated milk from the refrigerator and measure out 5 ounces into a small pitcher or pouring vessel.
  3. Pour 2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk into your tall drinking glass.
  4. Carefully pour the hot espresso directly over the condensed milk, stirring gently with a spoon as you pour.
  5. Drop 4 to 6 ice cubes into the glass if you prefer your morir sonando chilled rather than hot.
  6. Pour the cold evaporated milk in a slow, steady stream into the glass, watching it swirl through the coffee and create a marbled effect.
  7. Give the drink a gentle stir with your spoon, moving from top to bottom to ensure the condensed milk has fully incorporated.
  8. Take your first sip and assess the sweetness level. If you want it sweeter, stir in another half tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk and mix well.

Notes

Chill your evaporated milk in the refrigerator before making the drink, and use freshly brewed espresso for the best contrast in flavors and temperatures. Pour the evaporated milk slowly to create the gorgeous swirled effect. For a less sweet version, use 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk instead of 2. The drink is best enjoyed immediately after making it.
