Ingredients
  

Main
  • 4 cups milk or almond milk for a dairy-free option
  • 1/2 cup masa harina
  • 1/2 cup chocolate Mexican chocolate or cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Method
 

  1. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the masa harina with a cup of warm milk until smooth.
  3. Add the masa harina mixture to the simmering milk, whisking continuously.
  4. Stir in the chocolate, allowing it to melt completely into the mixture.
  5. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt, stirring until well combined.
  6. Continue to simmer the champurrado for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. Pour the champurrado into mugs and enjoy it warm.

Notes

Serve topped with whipped cream or marshmallows for an extra treat.
