  • 1 teaspoon ceremonial-grade matcha powder
  • 0.75 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 ounces simple syrup
  • 2 ounces cold water plus a bit more for whisking
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: pinch of sea salt for rim
  • Optional: fresh lemon twist for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with tight lid
  • Small whisk or bamboo matcha whisk (chasen)
  • Jigger for measuring spirits
  • Strainer
  • Cocktail glass (coupe or martini glass)
  • Small bowl for whisking matcha
  • Bar spoon
  • Fine mesh strainer (optional, for smoothness)

Method

  1. Pour 2 ounces of cold water into a small bowl and add 1 teaspoon of matcha powder, then whisk vigorously in quick circles until frothy with no lumps.
  2. Fill a cocktail glass or coupe with ice and set aside to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
  3. Measure 1.5 ounces of vodka with a jigger and pour into your cocktail shaker or mason jar.
  4. Add 0.75 ounces of fresh lemon juice and 0.5 ounces of simple syrup to the shaker.
  5. Pour the whisked matcha mixture into the shaker and stir gently with a bar spoon to combine.
  6. Add ice cubes to the shaker, seal tightly, and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds to chill and froth the drink.
  7. Discard the ice from the chilled glass and strain the cocktail into it, using a fine mesh strainer for extra smoothness if desired.
  8. Express a fresh lemon twist over the surface and drop it in or garnish with a thin lemon wheel, then serve immediately.

Notes

Serve immediately to enjoy the frothy head and optimal chill.
