Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces Maker's Mark bourbon
  • 1 sugar cube or one-half teaspoon of simple syrup
  • 2 to 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters optional but recommended
  • Ice preferably one large cube or several quality ice chunks
  • Orange peel for garnish
  • Maraschino cherry optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Mixing glass or cocktail shaker
  • Bar spoon or long-handled spoon
  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring
  • Rocks glass or lowball glass
  • Muddler or back of a bar spoon
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Zester or vegetable peeler

Method

  1. Chill your rocks glass in the freezer while you gather ingredients.
  2. Remove the glass from the freezer and add the sugar cube to the glass.
  3. Add two to three dashes of Angostura bitters and one dash of orange bitters to the sugar cube.
  4. Muddle gently using a muddler or the back of a spoon to break down the sugar cube and release the bitters oils.
  5. Add approximately one-half teaspoon of water to the glass and stir to dissolve the sugar.
  6. Add ice to the glass (one large cube or several ice chunks).
  7. Pour two ounces of Maker's Mark bourbon over the ice.
  8. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about ten seconds to chill and dilute the drink slightly.
  9. Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by twisting it skin-side down, then drop the peel into the glass.
  10. Optionally, garnish with a maraschino cherry.
