Homemade Gatorade

This homemade sports drink gives you the same hydration and electrolyte boost as store-bought versions, but you get to skip the artificial dyes, adjust the sweetness to your taste, and actually know what you're drinking. It takes about five minutes to mix together and costs just pennies per serving.

Ingredients

Main
  • 32 ounces 4 cups water
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice fresh or bottled
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride or a pinch of table salt

Equipment

  • One quart-sized pitcher or container
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stirring spoon
  • Funnel (optional)
  • Water bottle or drinking glasses

Method

  1. Pour 32 ounces of cool water into your quart pitcher.
  2. Pour in 1/4 cup of lemon juice into the water.
  3. Add 1/4 cup of honey to the pitcher and stir well for about 30 seconds until it dissolves completely.
  4. Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt while stirring continuously.
  5. Add 1/8 teaspoon of potassium chloride (or a pinch of salt if using that instead) and stir for another 15 seconds.
  6. Take a small sip and adjust if needed. If too sweet, add a tablespoon of water; if too tart, add a tiny bit more honey.
  7. Pop the pitcher into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before drinking if you have time.
  8. Pour the finished drink into water bottles or glasses and keep one with you during exercise.

Notes

Store in an airtight pitcher in the fridge for up to 3 days. Stir or shake before each use as salt and potassium can settle to the bottom. For best results, make the night before your workout so it's ice cold and ready to grab. Drink it within three days for maximum flavor and potency.
