Ingredients

Main
  • 1.5 ounces vodka premium quality works best
  • 4 ounces fresh orange juice or good quality bottled
  • 0.5 ounce Galliano liqueur
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • Highball glass
  • Jigger or measuring spoon
  • Bar spoon or long cocktail spoon
  • Citrus squeezer or juicer (optional)

Method

  1. Fill a highball glass generously with ice cubes.
  2. Use a jigger to measure exactly 1.5 ounces of vodka.
  3. Pour the measured vodka over the ice in your highball glass.
  4. Measure 4 ounces of fresh orange juice and pour it into the glass with the vodka.
  5. Use a bar spoon to stir the vodka and orange juice together for about 10 seconds to distribute the flavors evenly.
  6. Carefully measure 0.5 ounce of Galliano liqueur using your jigger.
  7. Pour the Galliano slowly over the back of a bar spoon so it floats on top of the drink rather than sinking to the bottom.
  8. Place an orange slice on the rim or drop it into the glass as a garnish. Serve immediately while the ice is still solid and the drink is properly chilled.

Notes

Do not skip the Galliano float as it transforms this from a basic screwdriver into the Harvey Wallbanger. Fresh orange juice makes a measurable difference in brightness and flavor. Use large, quality ice cubes that melt slowly. Chill your glass for five minutes in the freezer before making the drink if you have time. Serve immediately for best results.
