  • Bar jigger for measuring liquids
  • Mixing glass or pint glass
  • Cocktail spoon or bar spoon
  • Margarita or coupe glass
  • Lime for garnish and rim
  • Shallow plate for rim salt
  • Muddler (optional)

Method

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your margarita glass to coat with fresh lime juice.
  2. Pour chili-salt mixture onto a shallow plate and invert the wet glass to coat the rim evenly.
  3. Add about one cup of ice to your cocktail shaker, filling it three-quarters full.
  4. Measure and pour 1.5 ounces of tequila and 0.75 ounces of Cointreau into the ice-filled shaker.
  5. Add 1 ounce of fresh lime juice and 0.25 ounces of black licorice liqueur; if using, add 0.5 ounces of fresh orange juice.
  6. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 10 to 12 seconds until the outside is frosty.
  7. Strain the mixture into the prepared rimmed glass, leaving the ice behind in the shaker.
  8. Add fresh ice if desired and garnish with an orange or lime wheel; serve immediately while ice-cold.

Notes

Always use freshly squeezed lime juice and serve immediately while the drink is ice-cold and the rim is crisp.
