Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 3 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
  • 0.5 ounce dry vermouth
  • 0.5 ounce lime juice
  • 0.25 ounce simple syrup
  • Ice for shaking and chilling the glass
  • Grapefruit wheel or twist for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Martini glass
  • Bar spoon or long spoon
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Cutting board and knife

Method

  1. Place your martini glass in the freezer for at least two minutes before mixing the cocktail.
  2. Cut a fresh grapefruit in half and juice it using a citrus reamer or juicer, aiming for 3 ounces of juice.
  3. Cut a fresh lime in half and juice it to get 0.5 ounce of lime juice; use it immediately for best flavor.
  4. Fill your cocktail shaker about three-quarters full with ice cubes for proper chilling and dilution.
  5. Pour 2 ounces of vodka and 0.5 ounce of dry vermouth into the shaker using a jigger.
  6. Add 3 ounces of fresh grapefruit juice, 0.5 ounce of lime juice, and 0.25 ounce of simple syrup to the shaker.
  7. Close the shaker and shake vigorously for about ten seconds, until the outside of the shaker becomes frosty and cold.
  8. Strain the cocktail through a fine mesh strainer into the chilled martini glass to remove ice shards.
  9. Express the oils from a grapefruit twist over the drink and drop the twist into the glass as garnish.

Notes

Always use fresh citrus juice squeezed within minutes of mixing your drink; this single step makes the most difference to the final taste.
