Ingredients
  

Main
  • 1.5 oz cognac VSOP or better quality
  • 0.75 oz Grand Marnier or other orange liqueur
  • 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice squeezed just before mixing
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup or 0.25 oz if you prefer less sweet
  • Ice large cubes preferred, or regular ice if that's what you have
  • Sugar for rimming the glass
  • Lemon twist for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker (Boston shaker or mixing glass with strainer)
  • Jigger (1.5 oz and 0.75 oz sizes)
  • Hawthorne strainer or julep strainer
  • Cocktail coupe or saucer (chilled)
  • Bar spoon
  • Small plate for sugar rim
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Paring knife for lemon twist

Method
 

  1. Chill your coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the sugar rim by moistening the glass rim with a lemon wedge and dipping it into sugar.
  3. Juice a fresh lemon and measure 0.5 oz of juice, straining out pulp.
  4. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice until two-thirds full.
  5. Measure and add 1.5 oz of cognac to the shaker.
  6. Add 0.75 oz of Grand Marnier and 0.5 oz of simple syrup to the shaker.
  7. Add 0.5 oz of fresh lemon juice to the shaker.
  8. Shake vigorously for 10 to 12 seconds until the shaker is frosty.
  9. Strain the cocktail into the chilled sugar-rimmed coupe glass.
  10. Garnish with a lemon twist and serve immediately.

Notes

Serve immediately and drink within five minutes for best flavor and texture.
