Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces reposado or anejo tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice about 1 large lime
  • 0.75 ounces triple sec or Cointreau
  • 0.5 ounces fresh agave nectar or simple syrup
  • Ice cubes preferably large format
  • Coarse sea salt for rimming
  • 1 lime wheel or wedge for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with tight-fitting lid
  • Jigger or measuring cup for accurate pours
  • Bar spoon or long mixing spoon
  • Strainer or fine-mesh sieve
  • Rocks glass or margarita glass
  • Citrus juicer or manual hand juicer
  • Cutting board and sharp knife for lime prep

Method

  1. Take a rocks glass or margarita glass and fill it halfway with ice cubes.
  2. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass to wet it, then dip the rim into coarse sea salt to coat evenly.
  3. Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes to chill the drink quickly without over-diluting.
  4. Pour 2 ounces of reposado or anejo tequila into the shaker.
  5. Add 0.75 ounces of triple sec or Cointreau to the shaker.
  6. Add 1 ounce of fresh lime juice to the shaker.
  7. Add 0.5 ounces of fresh agave nectar or simple syrup to the shaker.
  8. Shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until the shaker feels frosty on the outside.
  9. Remove the ice from your prepared glass and strain the cocktail into it using a fine mesh sieve or strainer.
  10. Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge and serve immediately.

Notes

Serve immediately for best flavor. Optionally chill the glass in the freezer for 2 to 3 minutes before preparing to keep the drink extra cold.
