Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces bourbon whiskey preferably 90-100 proof
  • 0.5 ounces honey liqueur such as Bols or Luxardo Maraschino as alternatives
  • 0.75 ounces fresh lemon juice about half a medium lemon
  • Ice cubes for shaking
  • Optional: lemon twist for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker (Boston shaker or standard mixing shaker)
  • Jigger or shot glass for measuring
  • Barspoon or long mixing spoon
  • Citrus juicer or hand squeezer
  • Strainer (built-in or separate bar strainer)
  • Rocks glass or coupe glass
  • Mixing glass (optional but helpful)

Method

  1. Chill your glass: place your rocks glass or coupe in the freezer for at least one minute before mixing.
  2. Measure your bourbon: pour exactly 2 ounces of bourbon into a jigger and add it to the cocktail shaker.
  3. Add the honey liqueur: measure 0.5 ounces of honey liqueur and pour it into the shaker with the bourbon.
  4. Squeeze fresh lemon juice: cut your lemon in half and juice one half to yield 0.75 ounces of fresh lemon juice into the shaker.
  5. Add ice to the shaker: fill the cocktail shaker about three-quarters full with ice cubes.
  6. Shake vigorously: close the shaker and shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside feels frosty and cold.
  7. Strain into your chilled glass: use a bar strainer to pour the cocktail into the pre-chilled glass, leaving the ice behind.
  8. Garnish and serve: twist a lemon peel over the surface to release oils, drop it into the drink, and serve immediately.

Notes

Pre-chill your glass while gathering ingredients and serve immediately for optimal taste.
