Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces fresh ginger root peeled and roughly chopped
  • 2 medium lemons juiced
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon raw honey optional
  • 2 tablespoons warm filtered water

Equipment

  • Sharp chef's knife
  • Microplane grater or fine box grater
  • Citrus juicer or handheld juicer
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Small measuring spoons
  • 2-ounce shot glasses
  • Small mixing bowl or cup

Method

  1. Peel 2 ounces of fresh ginger root and roughly chop into small pieces (about 1 minute).
  2. Extract about 1 tablespoon of ginger juice by pressing the chopped ginger through a fine mesh strainer or using a juice press (1 minute).
  3. Cut 2 medium lemons in half and juice them to yield about 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice (1 minute).
  4. Strain the lemon juice through a fine mesh strainer to remove seeds and pulp (30 seconds).
  5. Warm 2 tablespoons of filtered water to about 100°F (just warm to the touch) in a small cup (30 seconds).
  6. Stir 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder and 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper into the warm water until fully dissolved (30 seconds).
  7. Add the ginger juice and strained lemon juice to the spice mixture and stir for 10 seconds; add 1/2 teaspoon raw honey if desired and stir until dissolved.
  8. Divide the mixture into two 2-ounce shot glasses and drink immediately for maximum potency.

Notes

Make the ginger and lemon juices ahead and store separately in airtight containers for up to 3 days; in the morning, warm the water, mix spices, and combine for a quick 60-second shot.
