Ingredients

Main
  • 1.5 cups about 12 ounces fresh strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped
  • 3 ounces 6 tablespoons silver or blanco tequila
  • 1.5 ounces about 2 limes fresh lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 ounce 2 tablespoons Triplesec or Cointreau
  • 0.75 ounce 1.5 tablespoons simple syrup
  • 2 cups ice cubed
  • Salt and lime wedges for rimming optional

Equipment

  • Blender (high-powered works best)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Knife for cutting strawberries
  • Cutting board
  • Margarita glasses or rocks glasses
  • Lime for optional rim
  • Bar spoon or long-handled spoon for stirring

Method

  1. Hull your strawberries by cutting out the green tops and discarding them, then roughly chop each berry into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Roll your limes on the counter with firm pressure to break down the internal membranes, then cut them in half and squeeze them by hand or with a citrus juicer to get 1.5 ounces of fresh lime juice.
  3. Pour 3 ounces of silver tequila, 1 ounce of Triplesec, and 0.75 ounce of simple syrup into a measuring cup or directly into your blender.
  4. Put your chopped strawberries into the blender first, followed by the lime juice and your measured spirits.
  5. Pour 2 cups of ice cubes directly into the blender on top of your strawberry and liquid mixture.
  6. Blend on high speed for 30 to 45 seconds, until the mixture reaches a smooth, slushy consistency without any large ice chunks visible.
  7. While the drink blends, chill your margarita or rocks glasses in the freezer for 2 minutes, or fill them with ice water while you finish blending.
  8. Optional: Pour a small amount of salt onto a shallow plate, dampen the rim of each glass with a lime wedge, and dip the glass rim into the salt.
  9. Divide the frozen mixture between your two glasses and serve right away with a lime wedge on the rim or dropped into the drink.

Notes

Keep your tequila and Triplesec in the freezer so the spirits themselves are cold when you blend; this reduces the amount of ice needed and prevents the drink from becoming watery. Use a high-powered blender for the best texture. Buy strawberries that smell fragrant for the best flavor. Don't over-blend or the drink will become watery.
