Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces 60 milliliters gin, preferably London Dry style
  • 0.75 ounces 22 milliliters fresh lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 ounces 15 milliliters simple syrup
  • Ice cubes for shaking
  • Lime wheel or twist for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mixing glass
  • Jigger or measuring glass
  • Bar spoon or long spoon
  • Citrus juicer or hand squeezer
  • Strainer
  • Coupe glass or martini glass
  • Citrus peeler or vegetable peeler

Method

  1. Fill your coupe or martini glass with ice and a splash of water, then set it aside to chill.
  2. Pour exactly 2 ounces of gin into your jigger.
  3. Cut your lime in half and use your citrus juicer or hand squeezer to extract 0.75 ounces of fresh juice.
  4. Add 0.5 ounces of simple syrup to your shaker.
  5. Fill your cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes.
  6. Pour the gin, lime juice, and simple syrup into the shaker over the ice.
  7. Seal your shaker and shake hard for about 10 to 12 seconds until the mixture becomes ice cold and slightly frothy.
  8. Empty the ice from your chilled glass and strain the cocktail through your bar strainer into the glass.
  9. Express the oils from a lime twist over the drink by twisting it over the surface, then drop it in as garnish and serve immediately.

Notes

Use limes at room temperature before squeezing as they yield more juice than cold limes. Roll them on your counter with a bit of pressure before cutting to break down the inner walls and maximize juice extraction. Squeeze your lime juice no more than an hour before mixing as citrus oxidizes quickly. Always use fresh lime juice, never bottled, for the best flavor. Serve immediately after straining for the coldest, most flavorful result.
