Ingredients
  

Main
  • 8 to 10 fresh mint leaves roughly torn
  • 0.5 ounce simple syrup
  • 2 ounces bourbon whiskey quality matters here
  • 0.5 ounce water
  • Crushed ice or ice cubes
  • One fresh mint sprig for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Bar spoon or long mixing spoon
  • Julep cup or highball glass
  • Muddler or back of a wooden spoon
  • Strainer
  • Ice maker or crushed ice

Method
 

  1. Rinse 8 to 10 fresh mint leaves under cool water and tear them into rough pieces with your fingers.
  2. Place the torn mint leaves into your glass and gently muddle for about 10 seconds to release the oils without pulverizing the leaves.
  3. Pour 0.5 ounce simple syrup over the muddled mint in the glass.
  4. Fill the glass about three-quarters full with crushed ice.
  5. Pour 2 ounces of bourbon slowly over the ice and mint.
  6. Top the drink with 0.5 ounce of water to balance the flavors.
  7. Stir all ingredients together thoroughly for about 15 seconds.
  8. Garnish with one fresh mint sprig on top of the drink.

Notes

Make your simple syrup ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator so you can whip up a mint julep anytime without delay.
