Ingredients

  • 2.5 ounces gin London dry style recommended
  • 0.5 ounces dry vermouth
  • Ice as needed for chilling
  • Lemon twist or olives for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail mixing glass or pint glass
  • Barspoon or long stirring spoon
  • Jigger
  • Strainer (hawthorne or julep style)
  • coupe or martini glass
  • Ice

Method
 

  1. Chill your coupe or martini glass by filling it with ice water or placing it in the freezer for at least 3 minutes.
  2. Fill your mixing glass with fresh ice until three-quarters full.
  3. Measure and pour 2.5 ounces of gin over the ice using a jigger.
  4. Add 0.5 ounces of dry vermouth to the mixing glass.
  5. Stir the mixture gently with a barspoon for 25 to 30 seconds to chill and dilute properly.
  6. Discard the ice water from your chilled serving glass and set it aside.
  7. Strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or martini glass.
  8. Express the oils from a lemon twist over the drink or add olives, then serve immediately.

Notes

For an extra dry martini, reduce vermouth to taste. Serve immediately while ice cold.
