Method
- Fill your highball glass completely with fresh ice cubes. This keeps your drink cold throughout sipping and prevents the drink from becoming diluted too quickly.
- Cut your limes in half and juice them into a small bowl or directly into your jigger to measure 0.75 ounces of fresh lime juice.
- Pour 1.5 ounces of silver tequila into your cocktail shaker.
- Measure and add 0.5 ounces of orange liqueur and 0.5 ounces of simple syrup into the shaker with your tequila.
- Pour the freshly squeezed lime juice into the shaker.
- Add ice to your shaker and seal it tightly, then shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes frosty.
- Using a strainer, pour the mixed cocktail over the ice in your highball glass.
- Slowly pour 0.5 ounces of grenadine down the back of a bar spoon so it gently settles to the bottom of the glass, creating the beautiful sunset color gradient.
- Place a lime wheel or wedge on the rim of the glass and serve immediately. If desired, pour a splash of Corona beer over the top for extra flavor.
Notes
The secret to perfect layering is pouring the grenadine slowly over the back of a bar spoon, which breaks its fall and allows it to settle gently to the bottom. Use quality silver tequila and always use fresh lime juice for the best flavor. Serve immediately for the most vibrant colors and coldest temperature.
