Ingredients

Main
  • 2 ounces tequila preferably silver or blanco
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 ounces coconut cream
  • 0.5 ounces triple sec or Cointreau
  • 0.25 ounces simple syrup optional, adjust to taste
  • Salt for rimming as needed
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1 lime wheel for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon shredded coconut optional garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Margarita glass or rocks glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Shallow dish for salt rim

Method

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your margarita glass or rocks glass to lightly wet it. Pour salt into a shallow dish and dip the rim into the salt, rotating the glass so the salt adheres evenly all the way around.
  2. Fill your cocktail shaker about three-quarters full with ice cubes.
  3. Pour 2 ounces of silver tequila into the shaker using your jigger for accuracy.
  4. Add 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice directly into the shaker.
  5. Measure 0.5 ounces of coconut cream and add it to the shaker. If your coconut cream is very thick, you can thin it slightly with a splash of water or coconut milk to make it easier to mix.
  6. Pour 0.5 ounces of triple sec into the shaker.
  7. Place the shaker lid on securely and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until well chilled and mixed.
  8. Position your strainer over the salted rim of your glass and slowly pour the cocktail through it, leaving the ice in the shaker.
  9. Place a lime wheel on the rim of the glass and optionally sprinkle a small amount of shredded coconut on top for visual appeal. Serve immediately while cold.

Notes

Always use fresh limes for the best flavor. Chill your glassware in the freezer for at least 15 minutes before making the drink to keep it colder longer. The simple syrup is optional since coconut cream already adds sweetness. For a frozen version, blend the ingredients with 0.5 cups of crushed ice instead of shaking. Recipe can easily be multiplied for parties.
