Ingredients

Main
  • 6 ounces brewed strong coffee
  • 4 ounces milk whole, 2%, or plant-based
  • 2 ounces chai concentrate or brewed chai tea
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
  • tiny pinch ground cardamom about 2 to 3 seeds crushed
  • tiny pinch ground cloves
  • 1 small pinch black pepper

Equipment

  • Coffee maker or espresso machine
  • Saucepan or small pot
  • Whisk or milk frother
  • Mug
  • Measuring spoons
  • Thermometer (optional but helpful)

Method

  1. Brew 6 ounces of strong coffee using your preferred method.
  2. Pour 4 ounces of milk into a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until steaming and small bubbles form around the edges, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Measure 2 ounces of chai concentrate (or warm brewed chai tea) into a mug.
  4. Add 1 tablespoon of honey or agave nectar to the chai concentrate and stir to combine.
  5. Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger, a tiny pinch of ground cardamom, a tiny pinch of ground cloves, and a small pinch of black pepper, then whisk until smooth.
  6. Slowly pour the hot brewed coffee into the spiced chai mixture while stirring gently to blend flavors.
  7. Froth the heated milk using a whisk or milk frother until light and airy with small bubbles.
  8. Pour the frothed milk into the coffee and chai mixture, holding back foam with a spoon if desired, then top with foam.
  9. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice levels, adding extra milk or chai concentrate if needed.

Notes

Make a batch of chai concentrate ahead of time and store it in the fridge so you can throw together a chai coffee in under 5 minutes on busy mornings.
