Method
- Fill the old fashioned glass with ice and let it chill while you prepare the ingredients.
- Pour 0.5 ounce simple syrup (or add one sugar cube) into the glass and add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters without ice.
- Using a muddler or wooden spoon, gently muddle the syrup and bitters together until smooth.
- Discard the ice water, then add fresh ice to the glass (preferably one large cube).
- Measure and pour 2 ounces Buffalo Trace bourbon over the ice and bitters mixture.
- Stir slowly with a bar spoon for 10 to 15 seconds until the drink is well chilled and lightly diluted.
- Twist a strip of orange peel over the drink to express the essential oils, then drop the peel into the glass.
- Add a cherry for garnish if desired, stir once more, and serve immediately.
Notes
Always stir your old fashioned, never shake it, to preserve the bourbon's delicate flavors and avoid excessive dilution.
