Ingredients

Main
  • 1/2 cup fresh blackberries about 8 to 10 berries
  • 2 ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice about 1 lime
  • 1/2 ounce Cointreau or orange liqueur
  • 1/2 ounce agave nectar optional, adjust to taste
  • 1 cup ice cubes plus extra for the glass
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt or kosher salt for rimming
  • 2 to 3 fresh blackberries for garnish
  • 1 lime wheel or wedge for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Jigger for measuring spirits and mixers
  • Citrus juicer or hand juicer
  • Fork or muddler for crushing berries
  • Strainer or fine-mesh sieve
  • Cocktail glass or rocks glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Cutting board

Method

  1. Wet the rim of your cocktail or rocks glass with a lime wedge, then roll it lightly in sea salt until the rim is evenly coated.
  2. Pour the fresh blackberries into your cocktail shaker and gently muddle them with a fork or muddler for about 10 to 15 seconds until the berries release their juice and pulp.
  3. Use your jigger to measure out 2 ounces of silver tequila and pour it into the shaker with the muddled blackberries.
  4. Juice your fresh lime to get 1 ounce of lime juice and add that to the shaker.
  5. Measure 1/2 ounce of Cointreau and pour it into the shaker.
  6. If desired, add 1/2 ounce of agave nectar for additional sweetness.
  7. Add about 1 cup of ice cubes to your shaker, filling it roughly three-quarters of the way.
  8. Seal your shaker tightly and shake hard for about 10 to 12 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes frosty.
  9. Using a strainer, pour the contents of your shaker into your prepared salt-rimmed glass filled with fresh ice.
  10. Top the drink with 2 to 3 fresh blackberries and a lime wheel or wedge perched on the rim. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, use the freshest blackberries you can find, ideally from a farmers market during peak season. Chill your glass in the freezer for 10 minutes before making the drink for an even colder cocktail. You can prepare blackberry puree in advance and freeze it in ice cube trays for up to 3 months. Always use fresh lime juice, never bottled, for the best flavor.
