Ingredients

Main
  • 8 to 10 fresh blackberries
  • 2 ounces 60 ml bourbon whiskey
  • 0.75 ounce 22 ml fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 ounce 15 ml simple syrup
  • 1 cup ice for shaking plus more for serving
  • Fresh lemon wheel or blackberry for garnish

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Muddler or back of a wooden spoon
  • Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Rocks glass or highball glass
  • Bar spoon or long spoon
  • Cutting board
  • Small knife

Method

  1. Measure 2 ounces bourbon, 0.75 ounce lemon juice, and 0.5 ounce simple syrup using a jigger and set aside.
  2. Place 8 to 10 fresh blackberries in a rocks glass or cocktail shaker.
  3. Gently muddle the blackberries for 10 to 15 seconds to release their juice without crushing the seeds.
  4. Fill the shaker three-quarters full with ice (about 1 cup).
  5. Add the measured bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker.
  6. Transfer the muddled blackberries and any juice into the shaker.
  7. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds until frosty.
  8. Strain the cocktail into a fresh rocks glass filled with ice, using a fine mesh strainer for fewer solids if desired.
  9. Garnish with a fresh lemon wheel or a blackberry and serve immediately.

Notes

For a colder drink, chill your glass in the freezer for five minutes before preparing. Use a fine mesh strainer or double strain to remove seeds and pulp for a smoother texture.
