Method
- Pour 2 cups of bourbon or rye whiskey into a 1-liter glass pitcher or mixing jar.
- Add 1/4 cup simple syrup to the pitcher.
- Add 2 teaspoons of Angostura bitters.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of orange bitters, if using.
- Use a vegetable peeler to cut two large orange peels into strips and add them to the pitcher.
- Add about 8 dashes of water to open up the flavors.
- Stir the mixture thoroughly for about 30 seconds with a bar spoon until blended.
- Cover the pitcher and let the batch rest at room temperature for 30 minutes, or refrigerate for up to three days.
- When ready to serve, fill lowball glasses with large ice cubes and pour about 3 ounces of the batch mixture into each glass.
- Express an orange twist over each drink to release oils and garnish before serving.
Notes
Flavors meld and deepen with resting; store covered in the refrigerator up to three days and stir before serving.
