Ingredients
  

Main
  • 2 cups bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons Angostura bitters
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange bitters optional
  • 2 large orange peels cut into strips
  • 8 dashes water
  • Ice for serving
  • Additional orange twists for garnish

Equipment

  • 1-liter glass pitcher or mixing jar
  • Measuring jigger or shot glass
  • Bar spoon or long stirring spoon
  • Vegetable peeler
  • lowball glasses
  • ice cube tray or ice crusher
  • Small cutting board

Method
 

  1. Pour 2 cups of bourbon or rye whiskey into a 1-liter glass pitcher or mixing jar.
  2. Add 1/4 cup simple syrup to the pitcher.
  3. Add 2 teaspoons of Angostura bitters.
  4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of orange bitters, if using.
  5. Use a vegetable peeler to cut two large orange peels into strips and add them to the pitcher.
  6. Add about 8 dashes of water to open up the flavors.
  7. Stir the mixture thoroughly for about 30 seconds with a bar spoon until blended.
  8. Cover the pitcher and let the batch rest at room temperature for 30 minutes, or refrigerate for up to three days.
  9. When ready to serve, fill lowball glasses with large ice cubes and pour about 3 ounces of the batch mixture into each glass.
  10. Express an orange twist over each drink to release oils and garnish before serving.

Notes

Flavors meld and deepen with resting; store covered in the refrigerator up to three days and stir before serving.
