Agua de Melon

A refreshing Mexican beverage made with fresh cantaloupe, water, lime juice, and a pinch of salt, perfect for summer.

Ingredients
  

Main
  • 1 ripe cantaloupe about 3 to 4 pounds, peeled, seeded, and cut into chunks
  • 6 cups cold water divided
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice from about 1 lime
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar optional

  • Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
  • Large pitcher
  • Wooden spoon for stirring
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Tall glasses for serving

Method
 

  1. Cut the cantaloupe in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds.
  2. Peel the cantaloupe and cut the flesh into 2 to 3 inch chunks.
  3. Place about 3 to 4 cups of cantaloupe chunks and 3 cups of cold water in the blender.
  4. Blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds until completely smooth.
  5. Pour the puree through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large pitcher, pressing with a spoon to extract the liquid.
  6. Add the remaining 3 cups of cold water, fresh lime juice, and salt to the strained liquid, then stir until the salt dissolves.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness with honey or lime juice as needed.
  8. Fill tall glasses with ice cubes and pour the agua de melon over the ice. Stir before serving.

Notes

Chill leftover agua de melon in the refrigerator for up to 4 hours and stir before serving.
